Today as the world thinks and talks about sustainability, it is important that we implement sustainability in our daily lives; in the simplest of things.

Let us begin with the plastic water bottles that we use. Here are a few alternatives that you can use to prevent the use of single-use plastic water bottles and the pros and cons associated with each.

· Steel Water Bottles

If you’re looking for a solution that is both eco-friendly and economical in the long run then I would suggest you steel water bottles because of their durability, their non-reactive nature as well as the fact that steel can be recycled.

It is the ideal choice for cold or hot beverage consumption for hours.

Steel water bottles can be quite expensive and some people might find the taste of Steel in the water a little disturbing as well. But if you are willing to make this change I am very positive that you will the amount of waste you produce will drastically come down. Ensure that you buy insulated stainless steel bottles. The average price range of steel bottles is around Rs. 200 INR.

· Copper Water Bottles.

Copper is known for its medicinal as well as antibiotic properties. It is believed that copper cleanses the water that is stored in it. Although copper water bottles priced higher than steel water bottles, they are still a preferred choice when you are making a long term investment towards sustainability.

It is not an ideal choice for cold or hot beverage consumption for hours.

Another major problem with copper water bottle says that they are high maintenance and prone to oxidation. The average price range of steel bottles is around Rs. 600 INR.

· Glass Water Bottles.

As opposed to the popular myth that glass is recyclable, glass is something that stays longer than plastic but owing to the fact that we use it more number of times makes it a more sustainable choice.

It is not an ideal choice for cold or hot beverage consumption for hours.

Glass is prone to breakage, but it is still a much better choice than plastic water bottles that often come with BPA coating in them. is a harmful chemical that is known to cause neurological and immunological disorders in human beings. The average price range of steel bottles is around Rs. 300 INR.

· Silicone Water Bottles

Silicon is a non-reactive material that is medical grade and safe to store food materials. It does not leech harmful chemicals into water like plastic bottles. It is also very durable and cheaper than the rest of its counterparts. The average price range of steel bottles is around Rs. 800 INR.

It is not an ideal choice for cold or hot beverage consumption for hours.

On a concluding note, I would suggest that when you buy a water bottle, ensure that it has enough capacity to contain water or any other liquid that you plan to take with you.

Do not buy extremely small or extremely huge water bottles. Also, see if it matches with your type of work- a hiker would have a hard time managing a glass water bottle! Buy a bottle that is definitely BPA free, also from a trustworthy brand. Ensure that your bottle comes with enough grip so that it doesn’t fall from your hands.

By the way, I love camel bottles. Camel bottles bring Style and Performance together, yes it does.
